The glory of Rama-durbara, in a composite Tanjore painting. At the heart of the painting is purushottama Rama, the superlative (uttama) man (purush). Seated right next to Him is the divine Seeta, His wife. They are surrounded by the faithful brothers, Lakshmana, Bharata, and Shatrughna; and at the Lord’s feet is Hanuman. Holy men and the gentle residents of Ayodhya populate the court (durbara) of the son of Dasharatha.
The central panel described heretofore is the largest one. Consequently it has the most luxuriant proportions of gesso and gold leaf work, characteristic of Tanjore paintings. The numerous panels that surround the Rama-durbara panel are a visual narrative of the episodes of Ramayana. There is Mother Seeta pointing out the golden deer to Her husband and brother-in-law. The wedding of the Vishnu-avatara with the Lakshmiroopa princess of Mithila. The fateful encounter with Soorpanakha. The battle waged by the vanara-sena in Lanka.
What makes this a valuable Tanjore painting is how extensive and precise the gold inlay work is, despite the scale of the panels. A solid scarlet hue predominates the colour palette, setting off the glittering gold colour.
