This painting magnificently glorifies Lord Ram, also known as “Maryada Purushottam” who appeared on the earth in the Treta Yuga to teach people how to live life in accordance with the principles of Dharma. Not only was He a great warrior, but also a responsible son, a dutiful husband, a valiant King, and a loving brother. Although He appeared as an ordinary human, He remained above the mode of material nature because the Supreme Lord always remains Superior.
The Tanjore style artwork that we see here captures the glorious moment when Lord Rama, along with His devoted wife Sita, and loyal brother Lakshman returned to Ayodhya after completing fourteen years of Vanvas full of sacrifices and hardships. The Lord sits on a huge throne and is crowned as the King of Ayodhya and Mother Sita as the Queen. All the residents and Vanaras assembled there celebrate this moment with great enthusiasm and fold their hands before Him with great humility. Two priests perform sacrificial offerings in the fire while chanting hymns. Among all the people present there, the great servant of the Lord, Hanuman, serves His lotus feet with love and devotion and looks up at Him with his eyes intoxicated with pure bliss. Both Lord Rama in His green complexion and Mother Sita in Her molten gold complexion are decked with several ornaments and adorned with a flower garland. The Lord with no amount of pride on His face brings a soft smile on His face and wishes for the best service unto the people of Ayodhya. Seeing this, two denizens from the blue-sky shower flowers upon Him.
