Brahmani- the Shakti or power of Brahma is the first of the seven mother goddesses, known as the Sapt-Matrikas. According to the Hindu traditions, she originated when Brahama, the creator of this Universe, the first being, from his mental prowess, created his female counterpart.
Devi Brahmani sits on a two-tiered pedestal, in the Lalitasana or the posture of royal ease. The child in her lap is an element used by the artist of this painting to highlight her motherly virtues and powers. Following her textual descriptions, she is given a bright yellow skin colour and has four heads. Her ornamentation is unpretentious, completed by a beautiful floral garland. The japmala and Veda in her hand are attributed Brahmani shares with Brahma, whose divine acts she empowers.
