The chaturbhujadharini Devi Sarasvati is seated in lalitasana, as is the norm with Hindu iconography. The snow-like white of Her saree complements the pale gold of Her ornate throne. The same is embossed with pure gold, a tradition of the classical paintings of the South. Pops of colour therein, studded rubies and emeralds, bring out the glamour of the metallic coating. Upholstered in purple velvet, the throne speaks volumes about the heavenly glamour of Devi Sarasvati.

As the wife of Lord Brahma, the presiding deity over srshti or creative projection, She is the presiding deity over learning and the arts. As such, She is indispensable to Him. A copy of the Vedas that you see in Her left posterior hand and the long-stemmed veena in Her anterior hands are integral elements of Her iconography. Zoom in on those fair, delicately formed digits, characteristic of the limbs of a musician. That full, soft-featured face; the halo of scarlet behind the bejewelled crown; and the dewy lotus petals wedged in Her dense black hair.

The foreground is carpeted with brocaded gold. A single foot rests on the sienna-coloured cushion on the floor. A plateful of fresh fruits is placed next to the same as an offering, and on the other side is a manuscript containing the sacred syllable ‘shri’ (roughly translates to auspicious). The vahana of the Devi, the peacock, has been finished with pure gold on either edge of the roof of her throne.
