Srinath Ji of Nathadwara is a beloved, childhood form of Sri Krishna, in the pose of lifting the Govardhana mountain, which is worshipped amongst his followers (Pushtimargis) as a symbol of his Pushti (grace). Usually presented in the traditional Nathadwara style of paintings known as Picchwai, the enchanting Srinathji in all his glory appears in this Tanjore painting, alluring the onlooker with his half-closed eyes and mesmeric Sringaar.
Against a dark blue or Shyama background, Srinathji stands, wreathed in gold ornaments and lotus flowers, which amplify his celestial beauty. Ornate vegetation motifs and images of deer-like cows are used on each side of the composition, which is framed by a row of cut-glass pieces and finally by a teakwood frame.
