For centuries now, the Newars of Kathmandu Valley have been translating their spiritual sensibilities into a wide variety of painting and sculpture. Known for their consummate expression and exquisite beauty, the one that you see on this page - a White Tara paubha (thangka) - is an unusual example of Newari art.
While it bears the hallmarks of authentic paubha art and depicts the Buddhist Devi in Her traditional iconography, the aesthetic is remarkably different. For example, it is a monotone composition comprising numerous shades and tints of charcoal. The cotton of the fabric-based canvas adds the appropriate texture to the solemn mood of the paubha.
The pristine Devi is standing in a cloud of riverine foam. The silken sashes of Her garment and the gossamer train of Her dhoti are floating in the breeze. The flawless shringar and the lotus-wreathed halo set off the serene composure of a splendid countenance.
