Pattachitra is a kind of folk art unique to Orissa. The temple town of Puri is particularly known for its Krishna-loving culture. The pattachitra that you see on this page has been painstakingly handmade by a devotional artist from Puri. It depicts the leelas of Krishna or episodes of the earthly conduct of the Vishnuavatara.
It is a bitone composition in charcoal and white. Like all the pigments used to execute pattachitras, the colours herein have been derived from soot and rice paste. The patta (canvas) itself is a homemade, fabric-based one, which gives the final chitra (image) its characteristic texture.
The surface area of the patta is divided into three major panels along the centre. Above it are elongated horizontal panels. The whole of this is framed by a straight-line series of miniature circular panels along all four edges of the painting. Zoom in on each of them to appreciate the richly detailed visual narrative contained within each, no matter the scale.
