Murugan with Devasena and Valli is a revered image in South India, where the trio is worshipped for the attainment of supreme wisdom. In this Tanjore painting, the twin Shaktis of Karttikeya, stand accompanying their Lord, who in his Chaturbhuja roopa is in the center of the composition. Devasena and Valli represent the Kriya Shakti and Iccha Shakti of Murugan, who himself is the embodiment of Gyaan Shakti. The three divinities stand on a golden sacred pedestal, surrounded by a majestic Kirtimukha aureole, and an arched frame. Ritual lamp and offerings in the foreground create a devotional ambiance, giving the Thanjavur painting the effect of a sanctum.
