Tantra belongs to the deep, religious East. It is the name given to a body of Hindu scriptural text that expounds non-Vedic means of worship. While it is a counterpart of the Agamas and the Samhitas, Tantra has twisted, esoteric connotations, especially in the visual arts.
The watercolour that you see on this page is a typical Devi of the Tantric cannon. She is wrathful by nature. Austere and ferocious in appearance. With Her hair dishevelled, merely tigerskin and a strip of saffron fabric in terms of attire, She is still incredibly beauteous; especially with the golden halo against a dark, cold background.
She has the ashen complexion of Kali or a Mahavidya. Mere flowers for adornment. In Her hands, a gigantic mace, the skeleton of an animal. A dumb animal for a vahana. Broken bones strewn about its feet.
