In this thangka, Amitayus is in a seated with feet in the vajra position (right over left), meditating with his kalasha or vase. His hands are in a Samadhi mudra with both palms facing up, on top of the other, and resting on the lap. The vase he is holding is said to contain an elixir or nectar of immortality (amrita) with Ashoka tree leaves which mean long life free of diseases. Amitayus means limitless life (meanwhile, Amitabha means limitless light). Amitayus, as seen in this piece, is also usually portrayed with finer clothes, jewels. This thangka shows Amutayus with red skin that signifies the color of sunset (reaching nirvana). He is also seen sitting on a throne of yellow lotus, the color symbolizing the attainment of enlightenment. He also wears a five-pronged crown that signifies Amitayus as an emanation of Amitabha, the Lord of the Lotus family.
