Two ladies standing in the interiors of a lush green forest, attired in a regal manner appear to be a beautiful yet simple representation of the splendor of femininity in this lovely watercolor painting. On a deeper interaction with the aesthetics, however, the mind wanders to the description of Nata Ragini, the wife of Raga Bhairava in the tradition of Ragamala. Though often depicted through a fighter engaged in warfare in an animated scene of the battleground, the tale associated with Nata Ragini mentions her as a devoted wife of Bhairava, who defeats Viraha- separation personified in the battle, to attain the affection of her beloved. The artwork here appears to be the artist’s experiment with the story of Nata Ragini, through an alluring representation of the Ragini with her Sakhi, with both of them carrying the sword to symbolize the martial note of the melody.
