The pristine Vairochana, the first of the tathagatas. He is the vector of vidya or awareness, of the five spiritual vectors (tathagatas) that make up the singular Buddha. The thangka that you see on this page brings out the beauty of the glacial complexion of Buddha Vairochana.
The rest of the colour palette is predominated by gold and crimsons, with hints of black and jewel tones. It depicts the multi-headed Buddha seated on a lotus with deep crimson petals, whose quivering texture is brought out by the gouache medium. Vairochana’s robes are the same colour, superimposed by delicate motifs in gold.
Gold-rimmed halo behind Vairochana’s head, and the gold-rimmed back of the mystical lotus throne. Mythical creatures of the Buddhist heavens at each juncture of the latter’s arc. A vivid solid-coloured background that adds to the dominant shade of the colour palette.
