The Diamond Bodhisattva Vajrasattva. In the Chinese and Japanese traditions, Vajrasattva is considered to be the esoteric aspect of Samantabhadra. The name is a portmanteau of ‘vajra’, which means diamond as well as thunderbolt, and ‘sattva’, which means being. The brocadelss Vajrasattva thangka that you see on this page depicts Him as an ethereal figure floating about the Buddhist heavens.
In the right hand, He bears a vajra (thunderbolt) of gold. It shines against the glacial complexion of His bare torso. The five-spired crown, semblance of an eye at the ajna chakra, and golden karnakundalas complete the visualisation. Thangkas are a product of ages after ages of visualisation in the Buddhist tradition, and the one that you see on this page bears every hallmark of the same.
A striking colour palette of pink and green and golden. Wisps of cloud, luxuriant vines interspersed with lotuses of a mythical beauty, and a composite of other Buddhist deities surrounding the central seated Vajrasattva.
