A rather modern reproduction of Raja Ravi Varma’s painting of the same title, this oil on canvas painting of a Veena player shows a lady from Malabar (Kerala) wearing a “Mundum Neriyathum” or a white sari with a golden border, strumming a Veena. From her hairdo and ornaments to the carpet on which she sits and the wooden wall of her house, every element in this painting represents the culture of Malabar. With henna-tinted hands, the Veena player creates tunes, while her youthful loveliness fills the heart with songs of admirations.
