This Brass Shodash Upachara lamp is used for worship and is part of the second half of the traditional sixteen-step Shodash Upachara. These theme lamps have a unique shape due to the presence of little tubes (sometimes just holes) and might be mistaken for an instrument for inserting incense sticks. An arch is a common design feature, beneath or in front of which a small figure, in this case, a regal peacock, is positioned beneath the beautiful Kirtimukha aureole. Thick cotton wicks soaked in fuel are lit by an attendant to the priest shortly before usage in the relevant ritual and extinguished soon after, the tubes linked to the rear side of the arch or holes carved in a ridge for the procedure of Aarti.
