A simple image of the seated chaturbhujadhari Ganesha. The anterior right hand He raises in generous blessing over His many devotees. Cradled between the anterior left and the tip of His trunk is a laddoo, His love of which adds to His childlike personality. In His posterior hands are nooses with which to rope the adharmee in and possibly hand them as divine punishment.
The fiery mineral ochre colour of this murti comes from the jasper medium. Jasper is a quartz/chalcedony whose colour comes from the high ferrous inclusions in silica. The sculpture that you see on this page has been carved from a block of jasper. The same has been imbued with a world of detail, which may be appreciated by zooming in on each aspect of Ganesha’s form.
On the belly of a gigantic lotus bloom sits Lord Ganesha in His usual childlike stance. His shapely elephant ears and the serrated, tapering trunk are almost quivering with life. Beneath the densely engraved crown, the brow pours forth with life and expression. The natural infusion of earth and white break the monotony of the natural colour of jasper.
