One of the Six aspects of Kannon, the Japanese goddess of Compassion (also seen as an aspect of Avalokiteshvara) Juntei Kannon is revered popularly as Candi or Durga in Japanese culture. Also known as “Sapta-koti Buddha Bhagavati” (The Buddha goddess of Seven Million), Juntei Kannon is essentially a goddess of benevolent nature, who nourishes the sorrowed souls as a mother.
Her primary hands, as depicted in this brilliant gilded copper statute are in the Muladhar mudra- the gesture of awakening the root chakra, a powerful gesture in Hindu and Buddhist meditative practices, to begin the journey to spiritual awakening. Her eighteen arms carry weapons and emblems that represent her swiftness in protecting living beings from the past, present, and future, and transcending them to a high spiritual existence.
Adorned with glistening garments, and studded with fine jewels, Juntei Kannon is the pinnacle of motherly benevolence, a virtue eternally revered across all sects of Buddhism.
