Bhaisajyaguru means “Supreme Healer,” “the Lord Who Has a Healing Effect.” The concept of medicine Buddhas developed in Tibet from the medical knowledge and texts from India.
The science of Ayurvedic medicines also reached the Himalayas. Hence, a Buddha along the analogy of Shakyamuni Buddha was created, who symbolised medicinal knowledge.
Out of the eight medicine Buddhas that were created, Bhaisajyaguru became the most popular. He is the only one who is depicted by himself without the other seven.
Bhaisajyaguru in his characteristic colour appears blue. This colour is also connected with his title, Lord of the Lapis Lazuli Coloured Light.
Here we can see the brass statue of Bhaisajyguru depicted in the same way as the popular iconography goes. He rests his left hand on his lap, and his upwardly opened palm holds a beggar’s bowl. In the bowl lies a fruit from the healing herb he is holding in his right hand. The plant is a myrobalan plum, a variety that is used as a laxative, or purgative. The highlight of the sculpture is the intricately carved robe worn by Bhaisajyaguru.
The mahapurulakshanas (thirty-two marks that distinguish Buddha’s anatomy) which are typical of Guatama Buddha can be seen here as well; the protuberance on top of the head (ushnisha), the hair whorl (urna) on his forehead, the three lines on his neck etc. Also prominent are the Buddha’s distended pierced ear lobes. His eyes are closed in meditation and have a calm and serene look.
