Kadappa stone is a variety of limestone endemic to the eponymous city of Andhra Pradesh. Its distinguishing characteristic is that it is jet black in colour and can be sculpted to have superb texture for a medium that is relatively cheaply available.
The Kadappa stone sculpture that you see on this page is the vision of a dancing Devi. From the swan vahana, She could be Sarasvati; but She is not possessed of Her veena. Also, despite being single, She is dvibhujadharini.
There is so much graciousness about the Devi’s form and figure. The deep black colour of Kadappa imbues Her figure with sattvaguna. Her dhoti and jewellery have been etched on to the stone, reducing colour. The same effect is to be observed along the ample breast and the voluminous plumage of the gigantic swan.
