Amitabha, while not as widely revered in Tibet and Nepal as in East Asia, holds a significant place in these regions as one of the five "self-born" buddhas (Dhyani-buddhas) believed to exist eternally. According to this concept, he has taken various forms, including that of the historical Buddha Gotama and the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara.
Amitabha is often associated with the color red and is typically depicted in a meditative posture (dhyana-mudra). His symbolic attributes include the begging bowl, and he is often accompanied by a peacock as his mount, with Pandara as his consort.
