Manjushri- he who has a sweet smile or voice, is a divine deity in Vajrayana Buddhism. His popular imagery depicts him with his sword raised, glowing with the flames of wisdom as his left-hand rises in the gesture of Vitarka- imparting wisdom. The form of Manjushri shown in the glorious copper statue from Nepal thus fulfills the twin tasks of removing the veils of confusion and enlightening the devotee with his supreme wisdom.
The icon presents him in a divine youthful form, adorned with flowing brocaded garments and traditional Nepalese ornaments, studded with precious stones. Animation is felt in the way Manjushri raises his sword-bearing hand, balanced by his other hand, gently bestowing upon the seeker the wish-fulfilling jewel, the culmination of all material and spiritual gifts.
Manjushri represents the swiftness with which the devotee must remove negativity and darkness of ignorance from life and the patience with which they must invite pure wisdom in their hearts.
