Shadakashari Lokeshvara or the six-syllabled Avalokiteshvara is a divine aspect of the Bodhisattva of Compassion in Vajrayana tradition. As a heavenly four-armed deity, Chenrezig or Shadakshari Lokeshvara appears in this copper statue from Nepal, enthroned on a beautiful lotus throne. His black tresses are placed in a hairdo, adorned with a five-pronged crown. He wears heavy earrings, necklaces armlets, bracelets, and anklets, all exquisitely delineated and colored. Attired in a colorful brocaded garment, Lokeshvara carries his characteristic attributes- rosary, lotus, and Chintamani or wish-fulfilling jewel. The countenance of Lokeshvara emits a divine radiance, amplified by the gilding and fine lines that depict his meditative eyes and delicate lips.
The six-syllable Mantra “Om Mani Padme Hum”- an evocation of this form of Avalokiteshvara is one of the most potent mantras in Vajrayana Buddhism, chanted by devotees to attain higher spiritual levels and the benevolent gaze of Lokeshvara.
