Sudarshana is the name given to the chakra or discus of Lord Vishnu. It is symbolic of time and the havoc it wreaks upon existence as we know it. As such, the Sudarshana Roopa (form) of the Lord is His all-annihilating aspect. The murti that you see on this page portrays Sudarshana Vishnu within a perfectly circular aureole from which emerge discrete quanta of flames (prabhavali).
Sudarshana Vishnu bears the implements of all three of the Brahma-Vishnu-Mahesha trinity. His multiple limbs bear a variety of weapons, while His two feet are balanced upon each half of the damroo of Shiva. A six-pointed yantra is right behind the wrathful figure. Interestingly, the reverse of this murti features the seated figure of Lord Narasimha, a particularly ferocious Vishnu-avatar.
The legs of Narasimha are in sukhasana and He is possessed of four arms (chaturbhujadhari). A five-hooded snake that bares its fangs upon the onlooker balances Him on its head. A high plinth supports the ensemble described heretofore. In fact, the style in which it is made and the engravings on its body are the hallmarks of South Indian workmanship.
