Varahi, the female counterpart of the Varaha incarnation of the Lord Vishnu is one of the Sapta Matrikas (seven mother goddesses) who hold a revered space in Shaktism and Tantricism. Different texts give different origin stories for Varahi and the Matrikas but all of them converge on the purpose of the goddesses. Varahi and the mother-goddesses originated to salvage the balance of the universe destroyed by demon kings.
The Shakti (power) of Varaha, Vishnu in the boar incarnation, Varahi is seen in this brass idol as a woman with the face of a sow. On her head is the elongated Karandamukuta, her neck decorated with two gold necklaces, her waist with a jeweled girdle, her arms and hands with armlets and bangles, and her feet with anklets. Varahi is clad in a fine sari with small floral symbols and motifs on the border. Her secondary limbs hold chakra (discus), Hala (plow), an ax, shankha (conch), musal (pestle), and paash (noose). Her left hand is in the varada mudra, and her right-hand forms the Abhaya Mudra.
In this immaculate image of the goddess Varahi, the true attraction is in her face, which though not of an enchanting woman like the rest of her appearance, is polished well and gleams in the aura of this distinguished Tantric goddess.
