Palden Lhamo, also known as Panden Lhamo, Magzor Gyalmo, or Remati, holds a significant protective role within the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. She is revered as the principal proteress of Tibet and is considered the guardian deity of both Tibet and Mongolia due to her wrathful nature. Palden Lhamo is often associated with being the tutelary deity of Tibet and its government. She is recognized as one of the Obstacle-Removing Mahakala deities.
In artistic depictions, Palden Lhamo is represented in a deep blue hue with vibrant red hair. She is often portrayed riding side-saddle on a white mule, crossing what appears to be a sea of blood. Palden Lhamo is frequently depicted with three eyes and is sometimes shown in the act of drinking blood from a human skull. The red color of her hair symbolizes her fierce and wrathful nature, which is dedicated to safeguarding the Dharma and the well-being of Tibet and its people.
