Dhalucha's literal meaning is “hanging lamp,” which holds cultural and religious significance in Nepal. Used for daily prayers to Gods, typically on the balcony by the Newari community. The lamp is filled with ghee or oil and lit with a cotton wick. The warm glow symbolizes the dispelling of darkness and the illumination of wisdom. Though it is used for prayers regularly it is most important during the period of “Indra Jatra”. It is said that on the next day of the “Indra Jatra” it is essential to light the lamp before having the Newari ethic bhoj samay baji. Only after praying and lighting up the lamps, do all the members of the family start to eat their Bhoj (Feast).
