Citipati is a guardian deity deeply rooted in Tibetan Buddhism and Vajrayana Buddhism of India. This divine entity takes the form of two skeletal figures, one male and one female, engaged in a wild and intricate dance within a blazing halo, symbolizing constant change and transformation. The Citipati is regarded as one of the seventy-five manifestations of Mahakala, a significant deity in Tibetan Buddhism.
These skeletal beings, the Citipati, are typically depicted with their limbs intertwined as they energetically perform the Tsam dance. They hold mastery over the domain of cemeteries, serving as protectors of these sacred spaces.
In their depictions, the Citipati wear expressions of wide grins, bearing all of their teeth, and they are adorned with long scarves, adding to their distinctive and symbolic appearance.
