Movement in Hindu culture is equated with life as well as death. The fusion of these states, the lord who rules over the forces of life and death and remains beyond both- Shiva, dances majestically in this beautiful brass statue. Different from his classic Nataraja pose, this form of dancing Shiva presents a sense of meditative serenity and pleasure, with Shiva’s body moving gracefully and his eyes suggesting a state of Yoga.
The divine dancer positions himself on an inverted lotus, a symbol of the cosmos, with vegetation sprouting from it to cling to his raised feet, representing the movement of Prakriti (nature), towards Shiva, who is the supreme Purusha (male principle).
The facial features, hairdo, and ornamentation tell that the statue is inspired by Nepal, a place where Shiva resides as Pashupati.
