Ganesha urlis are a popular item of traditional Indian home decor. Urlis are wide-mouthed shallow-bottomed vessels, which are designed to be filled with freshwater and strewn with the petals of freshly plucked flowers. They add to the sensuous aesthetic of the living space. A Lord Ganesha urli is a particularly auspicious item.
The one that you see on this page is a musical Ganesha urli. Along the frontal edge of the mouth of the urli are five standing Ganesha figures. Each of them is playing on a musical instrument. From left to right (of the viewer), the instruments in question drum, piano, trumpet (folk versions so far), cymbals, and flute.
Sitting on the part of the edge directly across the musical Ganesha figures is a seated Ganesha figure. It is sculpted with every detail of the traditional chaturbhujadhari iconography. The lotus-shaped plinth on which this figurine is seated is poised on a network of vine. A pair of long-necked, graciously plumaged peacocks flank the Ganesha figure.
