The Lord of Chidambaram’s Nritya-Sabha is Shiva's manifestation as Nataraja (Lord of dance and dancers), a balance of contrasting elements of creation and destruction.
Shiva holds the fire of destruction in his left hand while blessing the universe with creation in his right.
As he performs the most magnificent dance, Shiva embodies an oceanic stillness, with a meditative expression, framed by the swaying tresses around him, embellished with fragrant flowers and enshrining Devi Ganga.
Emerging from the two-tiered pedestal that is Nataraja’s stage, a Makara-aureole surrounds the Lord of Dance, beautifed with fiery tassels that represent purifying energy that emanates from Shiva’s movement, annihilating and creating worlds.
