Lord Buddha was a historical figure, who in his mission to attain enlightenment gives meaning to the sorrow and pain of his devotees. Buddha’s teachings accounted for a way of life based on ethical behaviour, a behaviour that in turn is based on the total detachment from passion. This brass sculpture is carved in such a manner that it realistically depicts Lord Buddha’s such state of meditation with the legs folded comfortably in padmasana while he sits on an enlarged pedestal having the smaller sized, closely carved lotus petals facing upwards and the ones positioned downward are spread beautifully on an elongated curved base.
Although there are a number of sculptures of Lord Buddha in a similar posture, what differentiates this from the rest of others is its super shining and glossy golden hue symbolic of the initial bright rays of the sun spreading around to create an aura of awareness and purity in the mankind.
Every minutest curve of his body and draping of the robe is carved in ultimate precision elaborating the professionalism, knowledge and creativity of the sculptor. Right hand forms the popular yogic mudra and left faces upwards placed on his laps.
Buddha’s robe is decorated with a thin border chiselled in deep floral carves, forming a decent pleated pattern in the centre near the chest. The erect backbone allows the robe to veil his body perfectly with the symbol of Dharmachakra (Wheel of Dharma) etched as a motif on his drape, representing Buddha’s teachings and a simultaneous way of decoration.
The high arched eyebrows and half-open eyes in concentration represent his bodhicitta (mind of enlightenment). Zoom in to the shape of his matted hair unusually carved forming a conical top, ushnisha. The tinges of green in this brass shade form a captivating combination to watch.
