“Kaaliya-Mardana-Krishna”, or Krishna who defeated the serpent Kaliya, is a popular image of the child god in Hindu art, a symbol of his omnipresent benevolence, which is beautiful and divine even when he battles ferocious beings to protect his devotees. Standing on the hoods of the fierce Kaliya, Krishna exudes a cosmic stillness and mesmerizing movement, which is captured in this wooden statue of Kaliya-Krishna.
Adorned with a Vaishnava crown, U-shaped Tilak on the forehead, ornaments, and girdled dhoti, Krishna holds the tail of Kaliya and raises his right hand in the gesture of Abhaya or fearlessness. Carved with the lotus pedestal, the figure of Kaliya seems half-emerging from the lotus or being trampled under the weight of Krishna’s powerful foot. The glorious beauty of the scene is marked by the presence of Kirtimukha or face of glory, adding an element of grandeur to the wooden artwork.
