The “hero of Madurai”- Madurai Veeran is a local god worshipped in Tamil Nadu, mainly in the Meenakshi Temple region, along with his devout wives Bommi/Pommi and Vellaiyamma.

These granite statues represent the powerful protector of the city of Madurai, with knotted hair, and a short dhoti, holding the spear marked by Tripunda, a Shaivite mark, in an alert pose.

His wives are draped in traditional style sarees, with titled hairdos popular in Tamil iconography, highlighting their association with the folk tradition. Both stand in a pose similar to Parvati, with one hand dangling and the other holding a flower bud, a symbol of purity.

Slayed by the local ruler and brought back to life by the prayers of his wives and blessings of Meenakshi Amman, Madurai Veeran remains the guardian of the city of the goddess, a formidable presence in the folk tradition of Tamil Nadu.
