Kuthu vilakku is the name given to the traditional South Indian lamp. The one you see on this page is an exquisite example of the same. It is fashioned from bronze, a medium that takes generations of artisanship to perfect. As such, this kuthu vilakku is not only a work of fine art, but also a product of artistic sanskaara transmitted through the ages.
It is a finely sculpted, long-stemmed number. At the zenith is a bronze loop with a solid stoopa of miniature proportions. This makes it convenient to move about the assembled lamp at times of ritual worship or pooja. A tray of lamps - five of them, continuous - slightly below. A hollow star-shaped structure further down the stem.
The base of the kuthu vilakku is the most ornate part of the composition. The silhouette is soft, curvaceous, and perfectly symmetrical. Like each part of the lamp stand, it is detachable for ease of polishing and maintenance.
