Sri Lakshmi is worshipped across the Indian subcontinent as the harbinger of unimaginable amounts of wealth and luxuries when she is pleased. Kings and commoners seek her blessings in order to gain all kinds of material and spiritual wealth. Goddess Lakshmi is represented in her Gajalakshmi form in this beautiful brass image. She sits on a kamalasana(lotus throne), holding two lotus buds in her hands, while her main left-hand makes the Varada mudra (gesture of bestowing blessings) and her main right hand is held in Abhaya mudra (gesture of fearlessness). The elephants in this brass murti are stylistically drawn, (with only their upper body shown depicted clearly) instead of being naturalistically represented. The artist has conveyed the idea of Gajalakshmi - the provider of grandeur and might that equals an elephant's pride.
