Vishnu is “Vishwadhara”- the foundation of the cosmos, an idea represented in his classic depiction in Chola bronzes, where the Hindu gods stand in an erect, upright, and graceful pose- Sampadasthanaka, conveying eternal stability.
Vishnu in this bronze statue is sculpted following the traditional iconography of Tamil Vaishnava temple statues.
The Lord stands on a movable lotus pedestal, used during processions and celebrations when the idol is moved around the temple town.
Each ornament and attribute of Vishnu is marvelously delineated, with a perfection that seems almost otherworldly.
From the elegantly flowing, unique triple-stranded Yajnopavita on his torso, flowing like the sacred Ganga River consecrating the Lord to his garment and graceful yet powerful musculature, every part of the bronze, makes it not just a statue, but a sakshata darashana (seeing in front of one’s own eyes) Vishnu-Narayana.
