A nilavilakku is a traditional oil lamp from Kerala. Made of brass this lamp is put on the floor and enlightens the area above the land. It is a columnar lamp often provided with detachable parts connected with each other with screws. Regardless of religious allegiance, the nilavilakku is utilized in practically all sacred locations in Kerala. This brass lamp consists of the holy cross atop the lamp along with five wicks. This lamp follows the preaching that Lord is the light and salvation. Regularly used during Christian festivals for decorations, it is a mandatory custom for the Syrian Christians to perform Margamkali (a dance about Thomas the Apostle) and Parichamuttukali (an Indian martial arts dance) around nilavilakku.
