Tsongkhapa Lobzang Drakpa, or Je Tsongkhapa, was a very prominent scholar, reformer, and teacher of Tibetan Buddhism. He was the founder of the Gelug school, one of the main schools of Tibetan Buddhism, and lived from 1357 until 1419. Tsongkhapa is well known for emphasising the study of Vinaya (monastic discipline), ethics, and Buddhist philosophy. He promoted a well-rounded approach to spiritual practice that included both academic research and quiet reflection.
His emphasis on moral behaviour, monastic discipline, and the fusion of compassion and wisdom has had a long-lasting influence on Tibetan Buddhism. Tsongkhapa is regarded as a renowned scholar and teacher, and the Gelug school and other institutions still study and apply his teachings today.
