Buddhist scriptures predict that Maitreya, a future Buddha, will materialize. Maitreya is considered to be the Buddha (Shakyamuni Buddha) of the future, bringing enlightenment to a new era. It has been prophesied in Buddhist scriptures including the Pali Canon and the Mahayana Sutras. The prophecy Matreya is prophesied to become a Bodhisattva, embodying compassion and knowledge, and she would guide sentient beings toward freedom after attaining Buddhahood.
The Sanskrit word "Maitreya" is "loving-kindness" or "friend," denoting the selfless nature of the bodhisattva. Maitreya is considered to be residing in Tushita Heaven in Buddhist teachings, where he awaits the right time to descend to Earth and turn the wheel of Dharma.
