Mariamman, often abbreviated to Amman, is a Hindu goddess of rain, predominantly venerated in the rural areas of South India. Mari in Tamil signifies ‘rain’ and Amman signifies ‘mother goddesses. She is well known as ‘goddess of medicine’ and her worship mainly focuses on bringing rain and curing diseases like cholera, smallpox, and chicken pox. She is considered as a guardian deity (kaval deivam) by many South Indian village-dwellers. She is portrayed with four arms and in the sitting position, holding a trident in one hand and a bowl (kapala) in the other. Her front right hand displays ‘Abhaya Mudra’, to ward off fear.
