In a popular prayer to the goddess of wisdom, Maa Saraswati, students, and devotees seek her blessings for “Vimala” (pure)- “Mati” (wisdom). Her worship and Sadhana (ritualistic worship) are performed thus to gain purity in thought and knowledge. This highlights the fact that not merely knowledge, but the kind that is pure and applied for the goodness of the world should be the aim of a seeker. Surrounded by lotuses- the symbol of purity, goddess Saraswati in this brilliant marble sculpture reminds us of her role as the bestower of creative and constructive sense- “Sadda Buddhi”.
The pedestal on which the Devi stands is decorated with incised lines, marking the waves of the primordial ocean, whose waters cause the origin and annihilation of the world. In the middle of this great ocean, Maa Saraswati is placed on an exquisite white lotus, surrounded by some lotus buds- the flora charmingly presented in the statue. In the waves floats a swan, a bird renowned for its ability to separate milk from water. This is a symbolism used to denote the ability of a person to separate the pure, true knowledge from the shallow kind. Just above the figure of the swan is a peacock, seated on a half-blossomed lotus flower, all its regal pride prostrating in front of the divine knowledge of Saraswati. The four-armed goddess has a celestial physique- rivaling the aura of the moon with her snowy radiance. Adorning her divine features is a milky white saree, draped in a striking manner and delineated in an even more striking fashion - its folds appearing to be the result of the folding of actual cloth and not of chisel strikes and polishing on marble.
The posture of the goddess is relaxed as if she is deeply immersed in the music her carefully shaped fingers produce on the Veena-stringed instrument. Devi’s amusement with her own melodies is felt in the swaying of her girdle’s centerpiece, her necklace, and the reassuring emotions her spellbinding countenance oozes. The skill of the sculptor of this statue is such that no matter how many times you encounter this work, you will never truly believe it is only an idol. With the subtle polishing and detailing of the statue, the artist has succeeded in creating a material form so artistic, that the elemental creativity personified- Maa Saraswati herself, thought it fitting to inhabit said form.
How to clean and maintain marble statues?
Marble has been a preferred material for sculptors and artists for more than a thousand years. It is a rock that undergoes metamorphism which causes recrystallization of the original carbonate mineral grains. Marble comes in various colors, designs, and dimensions. Pure white marble is the most preferred type of marble for making sculptures and statues since time immemorial. White marble is especially used for sculpting stone monumental sculptures since ancient times. The natural shine and luster of the carbonate crystals of white marble give a lavish and beautiful appearance to the statue.
Marble stone statues are highly durable and can even withstand harsh weather conditions without getting corroded, therefore, they can be kept indoors or outdoors without getting damaged or weathered. Although these statues can last for many decades, their regular care and cleaning are essential to increase their longevity and beautiful appearance.
Marble statues need periodical cleaning to maintain their flawless look. However, harsh and deep cleaning can result in making the statue look dull. If your marble statue is withering away, it is recommended to take the help of a professional cleaner. Marble is a delicate material and therefore needs proper care.
