The divine Lord embraced by Sri Lakshmi, who is the refuge of gods, sages, and humans, Vishnu in Hindu tradition is the eternal ruler of three realms, imagined in Chola bronzes as an epitome of kingly and godly virtues.
This magnificent Swamimalai bronze captures the balance between the cosmic stillness and the active presence of Vishnu.
With Lakshmi residing in his body symbolized by the triangular Srivatsa mark, Vishnu is the most beautiful one, adorned with regal Kiritamukuta, Makara-kundala, Yajnopavaita, rows of necklaces, and a silken dhoti wrapped around his sturdy legs, clasped by a Kirtimukha crested waist belt.
Vishnu’s legs are rooted on an inverted lotus, a symbol of the Universe itself. With his eyes radiating a serene, meditative quality and his lips hinting at an inward smile, Vishnu appears beyond the human realm and yet reachable in this sculpture. Fine etchings all over the platform of the statue and finesse in the delineation of the statue’s reverse underline the devotion of the master artist, that brings the Lord of Vaikuntha to earth.
