According to legend found in Buddhist texts, Shakyamuni Buddha was about to achieve enlightenment beneath the Bodhi tree when he encountered the last obstacle—the demon Mara. Mara made an effort to divert and prevent Siddhartha from becoming enlightened. In response to these difficulties, Siddhartha reached down and touched the Earth. Calling upon the Earth Goddess, she released a torrent that carried Mara and his army away by wringing out her hair. This symbolic action demonstrated Siddhartha's steadfast resolve to thwart his attainment of insight.
By calling upon the Earth goddess, Siddhartha demonstrated his connection to the planet and accepted it as a witness to his journey. This event is known as the "Bhumisparsha Mudra," or the Earth-touch gesture, and it represents the moment of enlightenment. The Buddha's triumph over the forces of illusion and his growth of a strong bond with Earth as an exemplar of ultimate wisdom realization is emphasised.
