Seated cross-legged, in the meditative posture of Padmasana, with his hands placed in his lap in the Dhyana Mudra, Buddha in this Mahabalipuram stone statue is depicted with a strikingly unique aesthetic. The folds of his Cheevara or monks’ garb which wrap his heavenly body, are delineated with softly curving lines etched in stone mimicking the flow of fabric. The dark tone of the stone creates a sublime effect, which is enhanced by the perfectly sculpted features of the enlightened one- his ushnisha or cranial bump, animated countenance, and fleshiness on his face, which amplifies the true-to-life appeal of this composition.
