Vajrasattva or Dorje Sempa (Tibetan) is a revered Vajrayana deity in Buddhism. He is the essence or manifestation of Vajra, which is nothing but a symbol of the pure wisdom of the Buddha.
In this splendid copper statue from Nepal, Vajrasattva sits on a neatly delineated lotus throne, with hints of silver embellishing the copper. He sits in Padmasana or the meditative pose, with his youthful body adorned with crowns, jewels, and silk garments. In his hands, Vajrasattva carries the Vajra, keeping it close to his heart, and the Bell (symbol of feminine principle and compassion), in his lap. The face of Vajrasattva glows, reminding one of his descriptions as “glowing with the rays of a thousand Suns”. The dual tones of silver and copper amplify the divine appeal of the statue, giving it an artistic finesse and enhancing the beauty of Vajrasattva.
