Mahadevi- the great goddess, more popularly called Parvati, the wife of Mahadeva Shiva and the mother of Ganesha and Karttikeya has manifested herself in this enchanting Mahabalipuram stone sculpture of the Devi. She represents the devotion with which Hinduism and India exalt motherhood and the feminine strength that is within all of us.
Fashioned from the famous Mahabalipuram stone, goddess Parvati in this murti, stands in a graceful posture, resting her delicate body against a decorated stone pillar. This is a rare visualization of the goddess in a stone sculpture, where she is seen in a beautiful leisurely mood. On the contrary, no leisure was shown by the maker of this Maa Parvati stone sculpture, whose skilled hands and eyes have created intricate details with a striking white against the dark stone, perfectly bringing out the divine aura of the great goddess. With fine lines, the neatly tied tresses of her hair in a pleasing updo are delineated, which frame the angelic countenance of Maa Parvati, the elegance in whose form makes you forget that the material used for this sculpture of the goddess is actually something as rigid as stone. In her hand, Devi Parvati has a lotus bud- an attribute (the unopened petals) that symbolizes origin, the moment before the beginning of the creation. Established in this marvelous murti, Maa Parvati is the mother, the creator of the entire universe.
