Darpana or the mirror lady in Mahabalipuram stone stands on a compact platform, her body immensely swift, betraying the rigidity of the medium in which it is presented. With one leg placed on the pedestal and the other raised up, the lady with the mirror strikes a pose in which her feminine allure at its peak can be witnessed. The dhoti that she wears is gorgeously drawn, matched with the minimal yet lovely jewelry that enhances the charm of her youthful physique. Behind her ethnic hairdo, one can see a leaf-shaped halo, decorated with lotus petal designs, an addition to deify the beauty of the lady with the mirror in this stone sculpture.

Her right hand raised up holds to a flowing branch of the vine that forms the background of this stone lady with the mirror statue. On the pedestal, we find a large sea shell, as if the maiden is a mystical creature, emerging from the imaginative depths to the sculptor of this lady with the mirror statue, placed within the transcendent black shell.

The most distinctive aspect of this icon is of course the mirror that the maiden holds. Looking at her reflection, an exquisite smile begins to play on her face. It is the smile of satisfaction, of pride, on her unmatched beauty. It cannot be too different from the pride felt by the hands which sculpted this outlandish Darpana (lady with the mirror) icon.
