Gods and demons churned during the Samudra-Manthan, and from the depths of the ocean, among the other Ratna (gems), cradled in the hands of the divine, emerged Kamadhenu, the wish-fulfilling cow.
The Adi Parva of the Mahabharata narrates this legend, of the heavenly bovine Kamadhenu. Inspired by the epic story, the sculptor of this splendid brass artwork depicts her being lifted in two hands, belonging probably to the Lord of the Ocean.
The dramatic effect of the hands is elevated by the numerous gods and goddesses represented in the body of Kamadhenu, underlining the belief that her body is the abode of 33 crore divinities.
Her calf, protected by the body of the mother extends his head towards her udders, adding a warming, maternal aspect to the imagery.
