It features a plethora of concentric tiers, each engraved with lotus-like serrations. From the base of the stem emerges three branches of curvaceous vine, at the mouths of which are perched a tray of five lamps each. A miniature stoopa emerges from the centre of each of the trays, which would make for quite the sight should all fifteen lamps be simultaneously lit.
Midway through the stem are carved figures of the gaja (elephant) and simha (lion), which are pouncing sideways into the air. Note the high-precision symmetry of the work as a shock of engraved vines emerged from the heads of the animals and gather in a glorious aureole behind the central Devi Lakshmi figure. She sits in padmasana, flanked by two gajas, dressed in divine shringar. Zoom in on Her face to appreciate the artisan’s attention to detail at that scale as well as the blooming lotus that is Her halo.
