Peacock or Mayura has been given special importance in Indian literature, art, craft, and ritualistic traditions. Mayurasandesa a 16th-century poetic work by Uadaya is a collection of poems written on behalf of a loved one separated from his spouse and asks the peacock to turn messenger for him. This beautiful Vilakku or lamp made of brass and with a central motif of a peacock biting a branch is an epitome of growth and prosperity some of the features associated with peacock. This lamp with beautifully designed columns is a tribute to the grace and beauty of the magnificent bird called Mayura. The central oil basin contains five wicks. This lamp is generally lit in temples during festivals and is also used as a decorative item during festivals. Deepam, an important ritualistic object is provided with the auspicious image of a peacock and made a medium to bring good luck and prosperity to a house.
